Month 9 Post Mortem

What went Right: Team communication went well since we planned everything out in the beginning. Everybody knew what they needed to do at all times so micromanagement wasn’t needed. Also we used a fluid form of agile so as the month went on we continually rescoped and cut features for the project in order to match our current capacity at the time.

What Went Wrong: This was my first project using Jira as the main form and while I did create completion criteria, descriptions, linked issues, and attach reference images I made some mistakes that become apparent later in the month so I have learned more about Jira and what I would do going forward. I messed up the documentation a few times by no double or triple checking things so I have learned how to do that more.

What I learned: Learned more about the documentation that goes into projects as well as how to use Jira in a smarter way including its limitations.

Wrapping Up Another Month

With the end of month 7 coming soon I have yet another month of experience in both class and capstone. This month I got emailed by a potential job opportunity and I have been working on that to potentially get a job before I graduate or maybe even get one while I am still in school.

We made a small game prototype this month and worked through some issues with scheduling. and people getting work done on time. Most of the updates I have are closed by NDA but I can say that my CS student is advancing from midterm and I have been so proud of him and the work he has been able to do in a new environment. Gateware has also been progressing smoothly.

MEX coming to an end

The research I plan to look into would be Twitch’s impact on the game industry. This research is important to the industry since if Twitch popularity can lead to increased game sales and an increase to a games lifespan. With more research we can figure out what makes a game “streamable” and how that will impact game design going forward. For month four I pivoted my research to look more into the esports side of streaming platforms to see if I wanted to also explore that side of the topic or if I wanted to strictly focus on the games. My goals for future research include holding my own study or gathering my own data so I can see firsthand what the numbers are saying and then move forward that that knowledge.  My capstone goals include being a producer for a variety of different projects and games and if I can help one of the projects I work on become semi popular in the streaming community then that would be a big boon to both my portfolio and the portfolio of the team I would be working with. For my career goals I hope to one day own my studio so I can use this research to give our games that little extra edge so I can continue to follow my dreams and keep my employees paid and happy. With that being said I plan to continue my research and see what aspects make a game stand out on streaming platforms and how streaming platforms in general are making an impact on the game industry at large.

Reflecting on my Masters degree research.

Reflecting on Project Team Management

I would say overall the course met my expectations of what I had envisioned. I learned about gantt charts, budgets and overall team management. I have incorporated the knowledge into my personal project and I plan to refine and grow my skill as a project manger with my new internship at Orbis. Other than that I have nothing more to add and I hope to keep up my good in my classes.

Finishing Up Month 2 and reflecting upon RTD

Month 2 has been one of the densest months it terms of work and the number of topics covered. Research into team dynamics has taught me how to conduct research and more importantly in my opinion how to look and analyze and find the limitations in another person’s research. My master’s research topic has been both a treat as well as a pain to find research for. I’m not stating that people are not researching or dabbling into the topic of streaming services effect on the game industry, but it has been difficult finding huge large-scale studies or studies with any amount of funding. Granted with the knowledge I have learned from RTD I believe I have most of what I have found. Also, this class as aided in my mastery journey by teaching me how to lead people and the different aspects of a team. From motivating people to facilitating good conflict that can lead to positive results. I plan to use this knowledge in leading my current team on my side project with seems to be progressing nicely. This months knowledge combined with the knowledge I hope to learn next month I plan to seek funding for my external project so the future seems bright even when the world seems to in constant panic.

Starting the Journey

Going straight into the masters degree from the bachelors degree has given me some amount of stress but has also filled me with confidence. Not having any time to wind down or have any time for my skills to dull from lack of use. Even with that the most troublesome thing so far has been the Corona virus shutting down the main campus of school and making most people panic as if its the end of the world. I will say that at least the start of this journey isn’t a boring one.
